POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist football team was defeated by Davidson 49-21 in the Red Foxes’ Pioneer Football League and home openers on Saturday.
Davidson opened the scoring thanks to a 31-yard touchdown by Aaron Marione with 3:58 left in the first quarter.
The remainder of the first quarter didn’t see any more scoring, ending things at 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, Brandon Lombana put Marist on the board with a five-yard touchdown reception from Brock Bagozzi, tying things up 7-7 with 12:48 left on the clock.
The deadlock was broken with 8:41 remaining, in the Wildcats favor, thanks to an 18-yard Jaleel Sands touchdown making it 14-7.
Davidson tacked on two more touchdowns from Brody Reina and Maxwell Weaver before entering halftime, making the score 28-7.
Davidson and Marist exchanged touchdowns early in the third quarter. Davidson struck first with a 20-yard touchdown from Christian Berry to make the score 35-7 and the Red Foxes scored next thanks to a 68-yard touchdown reception from Matt Stianche making it 35-14.
With 1:42 left in the third, the Wildcats struck again to make it 42-14 as a result of a, six-yard, Mari Adams touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Davidson made it 49-14 with 8:52 left on the clock.
The final touchdown of the game came from Matt Stianche & the Red Foxes, making the final score 49-21.
The Red Foxes visit Valparaiso to play in their third game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 23.
