Brewers Collect First Conference Win of Season

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Noelle Namba and Lucy Getzin scored and Bella Stevens earned a victory in her first career start in goal as the Vassar College Women’s Soccer team held off Skidmore in a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Saturday’s win, the Brewers first league win of the season, improves their overall mark to 6-2-2 and their league record to 1-0-2. Skidmore drops to 4-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in Liberty League action.

Vassar jumped out to an early lead when Namba scored her first goal of the season just over three minutes into the tilt. Namba headed a pass from Madison Bouggess to the bottom right corner at 3:10 for the early one goal advantage.

The Brewers maintained the one goal lead until the lates stages of the first half when Getzin scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the 43rd minute. Getzin completed a passing play started by Olivia Lavelle and Justine Tapert at the 42:05 mark of the contest.

Leading 2-0 at the break, Vassar outshot Skidmore 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

Corner kicks in the first half were even at 1-1.

The only goal of the second half came early in the stanza when the Thoroughbreds sliced their deficit in half.

Ella Stone scored for the third time in 2023 at 49:24 off a feed from Ashley Downes to close out the scoring game.

Stevens would be forced to stop two shots after the Skidmore goal to keep the Thoroughbreds from getting even in the game.

A desperate Skidmore team outshot Vassar 9-2 after halftime.

Corner kicks after the break also went to Skidmore, 4-3.

For The Brewers
Namba found the scoring column for the first time in 2023 and finished the game with a team-high five shots, putting three on goal.

Getzin also scored for the first time in 2023 and posted the first game winning goal of her career.

Bouggess picked up her fourth assist of the season and moved into a three-way tie for the team lead in points with eight.

Tapert assisted on her first goal of the season and pushed her season point total to three.

Lavelle picked up her first point of the season with an assist on the game winning goal.

Making her first career start, Stevens finished with three saves to pick up the win in goal for the Brewers.

For The Thoroughbreds
Stone scored for the third time this season and led the team with four shots.

Downes recorded her first assist of the season.

Claire Wolgast suffered the loss in goal with three saves for Skidmore.
