Red Foxes Unable to Hold Off Saint Peter’s

POUGHKEEPSIE – Three different student-athletes reached double-figure point totals for the Red Foxes, but it wasn’t enough as Marist women’s basketball were downed in overtime at home against Saint Peter’s, 58-57, Saturday afternoon inside McCann Arena.

Lexie Tarul led the Red Foxes with 14 points, while Julia Corsentino and Catie Cunningham added 12 and 11 points of their own, respectively.

With the loss, Marist fell to 5-23 on the campaign and 3-15 in the MAAC, while Saint Peter’s improved to 7-20 overall and 4-14 in conference play on the 2023-24 season.

First Quarter
The Red Foxes found themselves in a hole early as the Peacocks used the opening 5:56 of the contest to jump out to an 11-0 lead. Marist was able to get on the board after Lexie Tarul drilled a three-pointer with 2:40 left in the frame.

However, Saint Peter’s held Marist to 14.3 percent shooting from the field in the quarter to carry a 15-8 advantage into the second.

Second Quarter
The Red Foxes opened the second with four straight points to cut the deficit to three points.

However, the Peacocks knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to extend their lead to 21-12 before taking a 24-14 lead into the media timeout with five minutes left in the half.

Marist was able to trim the deficit to single digits before the half, as Saint Peter’s held a 31-23 lead at the break.

Third Quarter
The two sides exchanged baskets to open the second half, with Saint Peter’s slightly extending its lead to 10 points with 5:16 left in the third. However, Marist closed the frame with a 6-2 run to trim the deficit to 41-35 entering the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
The Red Foxes used the opening 4:34 of the fourth to go on a 7-0 run to push ahead 42-41 with 5:25 left in regulation. The Peacocks did not go away quietly, responding with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 46-42 lead before Marist tied it at 46-46 with 2:51 left in regulation.

After falling behind 48-46, Catie Cunningham drew a shooting foul with 37 seconds left and knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 48-48 and force overtime.

Overtime
Marist opened the overtime period with a quick 5-1 run, backed by a Julia Corsentino three-pointer to push out ahead 53-49.

However, the Peacocks responded with a 6-0 run before a Tarul three-pointer gave Marist a one-point lead with 46 seconds left.

However, Saint Peter’s scored on a three-point play with 5.2 seconds left to push ahead 58-57, eventually holding on for the one-point victory.
