GAINESVILLE, FL – The Army West Point track and field team finished its spring break trip on Saturday at the Florida Relays.
Mikayla Cheney impressed in her first 800m of the outdoor season. She put up the third best time in program history at 2:09.01. Emma Taylor’s 55.06 in the 400m was also a highlight of the day. It was the fourth best time in program history.
Ethan Hesson had a 4.90m in the men’s pole vault. Luke Griner and Mitchell Burr finished right next to each other in the 800m with times of 1:48.97 and 1:48.99 respectively.
Army now turns its attention to the Star Meet presented by USAA on Apr. 6 as the Black Knights take on Navy.
“Today’s weather was even better than yesterday and although we didn’t compete a full squad today, we left the meet with some nice improvements. We are looking ahead to the Star meet next weekend and the championship season beyond that so today was more about what we need to do to be ready and less about getting in the work. We didn’t have any wins today or any new school records. Mikayla Cheney stood out to me with her performance in the 800 meters. This was her first outdoor 800 of the season and her time of 2:09.01 and runner up finish in her heat ranks her #3 on the Army all-time list. She is running at a very high level and continues to impress me with not only her times but how she competes. Emma Taylor also put her name in the top 10 list today with her performance in the 400 meters. Emma showed indoors that she is capable of putting up some outstanding times in a variety of events and today we put her out there in the 400 and her result of 55.06 ranks her #4 on the Army all-time list. She is one of the most versatile athletes on our team and continues to etch her name in our all-time lists in multiple events. We had a great week of training down here in Florida and I think we are in a good spot as we look forward to the big meets coming up,” said Coach Mike Smith.
