ITHACA – The #34 Vassar College Women’s Tennis team suffered a hard fought 5-3 loss to second seeded and #37 Skidmore Sunday afternoon in the Liberty League Championship Match. The Brewers, who trailed 4-1 and came to back to within 4-3, received singles victories on Sunday from Macey Dowd and Ananya Krishnan.
Vassar had its 14-match winning streak stopped on Sunday and falls to 16-4 overall on the season. Skidmore wins its 13th straight league crown and improves to 12-5 on the season.
Doubles
Vassar trailed 2-1 following doubles play with the third pair of Krishnan and Elyse Duley getting the Brewers on the board.
Krishnan and Duley won their 13th straight decision on Sunday and improved to 16-2 on the season with a hard fought 8-6 victory at the third slot.
Singles
Skidmore expanded its lead to 4-1 with victories at the first and fifth positions, before the Brewers mounted a comeback they almost completed.
Krishnan got Vassar to within 4-2 after earing a victory at the fourth position. After Krishnan and Ella Provost split the first two sets, Krishnan battled to a 7-5 victory in the third to earn her 13th straight singles win and move to 16-2 on the season.
Dowd inched the Brewers closer with a three-set victory at the second position on Sunday. After dropping a 6-0 decision in the first set, Dowd rallied with 6-4 and 7-5 victories to get Vassar to within 4-3 with her 14th singles win of the season.
Duley kept Vassar alive after forcing a tie breaker in the second set and rallying for a victory that evened the match at a set apiece. After trailing 5-3 in the tie breaker, Duley stormed back to take the extra frame 8-6 and even the sixth singles match and keep the Brewers in the match.
Iris Li (Palo Alto, CA) also went the distance at the third slot on Sunday, suffering a heartbreaking 4-6, 6-2, 5-7 defeat to Katie Wong in what proved to be the deciding contest.
