KINGSTON – Ernest C. Myer Elementary School has been recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools for 2024 by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This annual award acknowledges schools that implement best practices to support the health of students, staff, and families.
Myer received recognition in three specific categories:
* Improving Nutrition & Food Access
* Implementing Local School Wellness Policy
* Bolstering Physical Education & Activity
Like all Kingston City School District (KCSD) schools, Myer benefits from food service programs that prioritize fresh produce, sourced locally whenever possible. KCSD Food Services Director Joe Baganz even spotlights a vegetable of the month that is incorporated in different ways for diverse palates throughout the month’s menu.
In addition to its focus on nutrition, Myer Elementary has taken additional steps to boost its school-wide daily step count. The school has restructured its daily schedule to include a longer 40-minute recess period, maximizing opportunities for movement and active play.
Principal Erin Nelson expressed her pride in the school’s achievement: “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a healthy learning environment. We will continue to focus on the well-being of our students, staff, and families.”
Myer Elementary is one of 878 schools across 30 states to receive this recognition in 2024. The award underscores the school’s dedication to fostering a comprehensive approach to health and wellness alongside academic pursuits.
