YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Army West Point closed out the Mardi Gras Mambo tournament with a 3-1 win over Southern University.
The Black Knights were led by a strong pitching performance by Amanda Eaglin, finishing the afternoon with 10 strikeouts.
Ashton White led the hitting efforts for Army in the game with two hits. Maisi Sigler, Sam Bocis and Emma Murchison each added one hit as well, with Sigler hitting a clutch two-RBI double.
Southern University capitalized on an early defensive miscue from Army. A fielding error allowed Southern to push across an unearned run, giving them a 1-0 lead before the Black Knights even had a chance to bat.
Army quickly responded at the bottom of the first.
Taylor Brown drew a leadoff walk, immediately putting pressure on Southern’s defense.
Alexis White followed with a single to set up runners on first and second. Maisi Sigler then stepped up with a clutch two-RBI double to left field, scoring Brown and White, swinging the momentum in Army’s favor as they took a 2-1 lead.
Both teams struggled to generate offense through the middle frames, as pitching dominated the game.
Amanda Eaglin settled in and controlled the game from the circle for Army, working around a few scattered hits while keeping Southern’s offense off balance.
With a slim 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, Army took advantage of a defensive mistake to add a crucial insurance run.
Sam Bocis reached base and advanced into scoring position after a defensive miscue. A fielding error allowed Bocis to cross home plate, extending Army’s lead to 3-1 and putting the game further out of reach.
Eaglin continued her dominance in the final frame, retiring Southern’s last batters and securing the complete-game victory.
