Giselle Martinez is the Democratic nominee and DSA endorsed candidate running for City Council in Newburgh’s Ward 1. She stands in solidarity with her community against the Danskammer fracked gas power plant. A study from the NY Department of Health found that emergency asthma admissions in Newburgh are 2.5 times higher than the state average. The emissions from the proposed repowering of Danskammer will only make this problem worse. Giselle believes that the long term solution to our energy needs is public power at the state level. If our energy system was run democratically instead of by for profit corporations like Central Hudson then utility bills would be affordable and switching to renewable energy would be prioritized. By advocating for the passage of the Build Public Renewables Act in Albany Giselle is fighting to create thousands of jobs in the Hudson Valley building publicly owned renewables with union labor.
