Luncheon Honors Achievements of Black Community Leaders

NEWBURGH - Josephine Giglia Byrne’s 5thgrade English as a New Language (ENL)students from Temple Hill Academy recently completed a unit on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The students began the unit by researching and building background knowledge on the Victorian Era and revisiting The Human Rights Doctrine which was studied at an earlier time. Students completed an author study to further understand the author’s view and perceptions. Students shared that they enjoyed reading the abridged version of A Christmas Carol. The students compared and contrasted various characters from the novella and discussed their character traits.

NEWBURGH - On January 19, Heritage Middle School kicked of a new initiative #KindnessMatters as part of #NoNameCallingWeek. Students were asked to answer #IWontStandFor. Their statements will be displayed throughout the building. “I challenge you to join me in healing one another. What you say and what you do matters,” shared Assistant Principal Marcie Heywood.

Heritage Middle School Kicks Off New Initiative

NEWBURGH - Members of the Newburgh Free Academy Debate Team participated in the Columbia University tournament on January 20th and 21st. This was the team’s first debate and they competed against nationally ranked students from across the country. Team members include: Janaiya Alexander, Anna Brozycki, Linda Chen, Julius Olitan, Raman Singh, and Jy’ajah Villani. The team was helped by Debate Team Advisor Jonelle Formato-Santo, Chemistry teacher Michele Bender, Social Studies teacher Russell Candela and parent John Brozycki.
